Built to Gather

The Spare House is designed to bring people together.

Built in 1899 as home to a dry goods store and the family who ran it, today the building has been fully renovated to create a gathering space for feasts, holidays, reunions, and retreats. The first floor is home to Wright Chocolate Shop—one of Maine’s finest chocolatiers. The second and third floors have been opened up to create a space designed for togetherness. In an era when the layout of many buildings encourages privacy and separation, the Spare House does the opposite—it is meant to house many people comfortably sleeping, gathering, and feasting together under one roof. The house features five bedrooms and a spacious kitchen, dining, and living area; the backyard opens up into 95 acres of conservation land with tent platforms, wooded trails, open fields, and a swimming pond.
